ABSTRACT

Over a period of time an installation can be subjected to various adverse conditions, in addition to the accepted inherent deterioration related to the aging process, and general wear and tear associated with usage. Therefore it is a little unwise to leave an installation for long periods of time without some form of formal inspection. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 ensures the maintenance of commercial and industrial installations is not neglected. Consequently a formal inspection and testing arrangement must be implemented because it is effectively a statutory requirement. Over a period of time an electrical installation can deteriorate due to a number of factors, however there are other reasons why a Periodic Inspection and Testing is necessary. A survey gives an inspector an opportunity to gain a “feeling” or an impression of the installation, to assess its condition simply by reviewing the external and the internal conditions of the electrical equipment.
