ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors describe the revisions they have made to the evaluation based on two developments occurring since the original publication: lessons learned from applying the methods and extension of the scope of the methodology to plant modernization using new computer-based interfaces. They utilize the program review model to support the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s review of several advanced reactor design certifications and for Department of Energy Operational Readiness Reviews. Nuclear power plant personnel play a vital role in the productive and safe generation of electric power. The authors examine the approach taken by existing plants to modernize their human-system interfaces (HSIs) by integrating new, advanced technologies with the existing conventional technologies. They discuss hybrid HSIs and will follow with a discussion of the revisions to the evaluation method stimulated by them and by lessons learned from applying the methodology. The main verification and validation evaluations include HSI task support verification, human factors design verification, and integrated system validation.
