ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide a source of information and guidance for the development and use of human performance tests. It describes the development and assessment of performance tests; as a consequence, it is based on actual experience in performance test design, administration, analysis, and evaluation. More time is needed to understand and comply with the added rules and procedures imposed by the testing process. Testing procedures should be designed with two objectives in mind: to maximize the proportion of true performance represented in test scores and to minimize the amount of error introduced into the test score by the testing process. Qualifications of the test administrator, or administrators, should match the test administration tasks. The chapter outlines the theory and foundations for performance testing, including history, applications, advantages, test components, and the characteristics of useful tests. It addresses how to administer performance tests, particularly in applying the critical strategy of establishing standardized testing conditions.
