ABSTRACT

Because of fair use, individuals making single-copy photocopies of copyrighted material are seldom directly concerned with copyright. Librarians, the chief suppliers of copies, are given many exemptions in the Copyright Statute, but under a multiplicity of conditions. The Statute is not a model of clarity, especially for industrial libraries. In the future, both librarians and publishers have more to gain from cooperation than from confrontation, and their stress should be on ethics and empathy. This paper attempts to clarify some of the copyright aspects still in question, especially since technological developments will introduce further complications.
