ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins with an outline of some fundamental concepts and understandings of what interpreting is and how it works. It examines several possibilities for the future of interpreting and presents strategies to ensure that the future of interpreting is skilled, rewarding and most of all, human. The book describes the spotlight on the bots and aims to ask how computers “interpret.” It provides a brief, non-technical overview of the big technological advances in modern machine interpreting, exploring their strengths and exposing their weaknesses. The book deals with the kind of interpreting delivered to clients. It also examines the key features of interpreting that delivers more than words. The book also provides an outline of what it means to market interpreting effectively to clients.
