Multilingual Humour in AVT1
In this chapter, the focus is on humour and multilingualism in audiovisual content. Data collected from the TV programme Modern Family are used to this end. Before investigating the original, Italian dubbed, subtitled and fansubbed versions of this TV series, the discussion considers the issues regarding the translation of this phenomenon in general and in the context of AVT in particular. The analysis shows how, along with serving humorous purposes, multilingualism contributes to characterisation and theme enhancement, thus becoming pivotal for the success of the series. Hence, its transfer becomes paramount and highly desirable in both dubbing and captioning, although the way this is done varies according to the AVT mode used.
