The Audio Description of Humour
This chapter explores the English and the Italian audio descriptions (ADs) of a recent romantic comedy titled The Big Sick. In order to do so, it first reviews some issues pertaining to AD in general and humour AD in particular. The aim is to offer a conceptual canvas and define the general stock of theories underpinning this type of research. Furthermore, it seeks to verify whether it is possible to detect similarities and/or differences in the way different languages and cultures tackle the AD of humour. A number of examples are discussed so as to understand how the issues relating to this practice are handled and solved. Since the AD of humour has been virtually unexplored to date, it is hoped that this work may open up future avenues of research on this topic.
