ABSTRACT

The advance over the last twenty years in the reporting and storing of original research that has been most readily accessible to the average scientist around the world has not been electronic or laser optical in nature. It has been the improvement in the speed of issuance and capacity for text and image of some conventional journals that have gone over to large format. The need for a leading journal in each subject field to adopt such changes is emphasized. A spirit of competition spurs other titles to keep up. Critics of print journals and print journal prices should be careful to note that there may be significant differences in efficiencies and information value between “before” and “after” generations of the same title.
