ABSTRACT

In ship collisions, a velocity of striking ship is one of the important factors to affect structural damage of struck ships. In the present study, a risk analysis model considering collision velocity is newly proposed. As a case study, risk analysis of struck VLCC (Very Large Crude-oil Carrier) due to collision is carried out with the collision scenario that VLCC is struck by another VLCC. Risk analysis of VLCC in case of using conventional steel as well as that of using highly ductile steel (HDS) is demonstrated. Not only risk of environmental damage due to oil spill but also risk of property damage/loss including cargo oil loss and total ship loss are considered. Effect of HDS on risk reduction is estimated and discussed in details. It is found in the present study, for example, that risk of oil spill of VLCC due to collision is reduced down to approximately 50% by adopting HDS to the hull structure. Future study to evaluate cost-effectiveness of adopting risk control option is shortly discussed.
