ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the underground press’ response to the economic institutions of the Sixties is examined through a consideration of what is meant by “late capitalism” or “advanced industrial society.” Within the context of this capitalist system, the underground press’ critique of the economy reveals how these papers disrupted the dominant economic discourse. The underground press promoted a guaranteed annual income to address the inflated importance of the money economy and debt; it encouraged the reimagining of industry to counter the military-industrial complex, and sought alternative economic forms in communes. Together, these efforts destabilized the accepted capitalist logic and revealed that even though life might never be perfect, it could be lived differently through the promotion of equality and community.
