ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author provides a description of the barriers associated with learning as perceived by the participants in her study, and strategies to remove these barriers are presented. The parents called for teachers to reduce the workload for autistic students. Autistic students’ negative feelings towards the subjects taught in school were also barriers associated with learning. Several students discussed their least favou-rite subject, which varied from student to student, and included Mathematics, German, Cooking, History, Geography, and Drama. Paige felt that having to work in groups that her son was not comfortable in could affect his learning, while Hunter believed that an unstructured lesson was a barrier as it prevented his son from engaging in the lesson. Teachers were concerned about their minimal knowledge of autism spectrum condition, their ability to make appropriate adjustments, and their use of effective teaching strategies to engage autistic students in their lessons.
