ABSTRACT

This chapter covers three main aspects of death and education. First, we explore how death and dying are managed in school contexts. In Chapter 8 we examined the significance of communities, and schools are, of course, further examples of community settings. Second, we consider how schools can play a part in death education – that is, how the education system can contribute to a better level of awareness and understanding of key issues relating to death and dying. Third, we look at how death education can be promoted beyond the school system so that those people who have not had the benefit of death education during their school days can none the less develop a fuller understanding and thus be better equipped to rise to the challenges involved.
