ABSTRACT

For a TV multimedia journalist, the newsgathering process can be a major juggling act, particularly when shooting a story’s footage or B-roll. Because most multimedia journalists are primarily interested in reporting, they often do not take the time to learn the skills required in photography. This chapter emphasizes the importance of those skills and teaches them in an easy-to-grasp way. Topics include shooting sequences – or wide, medium, and tight shots of the same subject – and capturing powerful moments while maximizing one’s time in the field. It features the insights of decorated photographer and MMJ Anne Herbst of KUSA-TV in Denver.
