ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a career development narrative which focusses on how social networks are used as a form of capital to navigate the labour markets of Vietnam and Australia. The author points out that his career journey has been determined by a wide range of external and internal factors of which relationships with some important others had significant impacts on guiding and supporting his career progression. His agency in actively seeking opportunities to further develop missing or insufficient capitals also helped him a lot in his transition to build his new career in Australia. His reflection suggests that students should exercise agency to proactively find opportunities to develop resources and connections with key stakeholders both inside and outside the university. It is because hard and soft currencies obtained in the university are insufficient for their employability negotiation.
