ABSTRACT

As employability has become considerably an individual’s responsibility, those with a great sense of human agency will be able to take initiative to overcome challenges and access available resources in order to navigate different career possibilities. Through using guided reflections, the author will explain why he left his permanent job to move to a precarious one. He will particularly show how exercising his personal agency has contributed to his career advancement. This includes overcoming negative emotions and turning them into energy to strive for future prospects, setting clear career goals on the basis of carefully considering available career opportunities, developing required forms of capital to enter the job sector he wants, and tackling weakness to eventually secure a career that led to a higher degree of job satisfaction. The author shows how his self-initiative and proactive personality helped him create affordances to develop various forms of capital essential to gain entry to his desired academic sector.
