ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the grammatical concept of modal auxiliaries, which are used to convey the likelihood or necessity of an action taking place. The chapter begins with a description of the features of modal auxiliaries and examples of this concept. After that, the chapter explains the importance of modal auxiliaries to effective writing, using published examples to illustrate the significance of this concept. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which features a fourth-grade teacher’s work helping her students understand modal auxiliaries. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about the concept. It concludes with final thoughts on this topic and a series of steps teachers can use to support students who need extra assistance understanding modal auxiliaries.
