ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses key guidelines for capitalization use. It begins with an overview and corresponding examples of six significant major rules that are relevant to the needs of fourth-grade writers. After that, the chapter describes the importance of capitalization to effective writing, using published examples to illustrate how it can provide clarity and enhance readers’ experiences. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which features a fourth-grade teacher’s work helping her students understand this concept. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about capitalization. It concludes with final thoughts on this topic and a series of steps teachers can use to support students who need extra assistance understanding capitalization use.
