ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses conjunctions and interjections, two grammatical concepts that consist of very few words and can have a significant impact on a piece of writing. The chapter begins by describing the features of three conjunction types—coordinating, correlative, and subordinating—and of interjections, providing explanations and examples of each. After that, the chapter discusses the importance of conjunctions and interjections to effective writing, using published examples to illustrate their significance. Next, the chapter presents a classroom snapshot section, which features a fifth-grade teacher’s work helping her students understand this concept. The chapter then provides key recommendations for teaching students about conjunctions and interjections. It concludes with final thoughts on this topic and a series of steps teachers can use to support students who need extra assistance understanding conjunctions and interjections.
