ABSTRACT
ESCAPISM, which is the pre-requisite of the romantic mood, was encouraged by the suffocating restrictions of the political and social conditions obtaining in Germany during the romantic age. The Germans were free only in the realms of philosophical and æsthetic ideas : there they had carried out their great revolutions; but not in political reality : they ’ dreamed their French Revolution’.
