ABSTRACT

The humanitarian initiative has given rise to a United Nations process to negotiate a global prohibition on nuclear weapons. The Indian government immediately saw the strategic opportunity offered by the humanitarian initiative. The Indian government has adopted a notably pragmatic approach when it comes to the humanitarian initiative. India participated in all conferences and voiced its engagement for the elimination of nuclear weapons, thus promoting itself as a responsible nuclear power while at the same time encouraging the pressure on the Nuclear Weapon States. The Non-Nuclear Weapon States were frustrated with the Nuclear Weapon States and umbrella states not wanting to take part in discussions. The humanitarian initiative has managed to launch a complementary platform to the well-established nuclear disarmament platforms controlled by the nuclear countries. The humanitarian initiative aims at stigmatising nuclear weapons, by highlighting the grave consequences of a nuclear detonation, in order to achieve further nuclear disarmament.
