ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with children engaging in the activity of using computer technology to produce an electronic newspaper. At the time of writing, it was good to see the Times Educational Supplement of 16 September 1983 carrying the story of third-year pupils at Light Hall Secondary School, Shirley, Solihull, producing an electronic school magazine. In an increasing number of homes, individuals have quick access to two nationally produced electronic newspapers, BBC-CEEFAX and ITV-ORACLE. New software developments, VIEWDATA and EDFAX, present us with the means to create electronic newspapers in schools. It seems to us now in the light of this small experience that electronic school newspapers offer one significant medium to confront the curriculum challenge posed by Norman Longworth. The major problem is one of pedagogical style and classroom management, as children are placed in the position of making products (in this case electronic newspapers) using the technology.
