ABSTRACT

This chapter reads J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997–2001) as political fiction for young readers about how to protect society from a fascist dictator. Voldemort, a wizarding supremacist, intends to erase all traces of non-magical Muggle blood because he is himself of mixed origins (a secret concealed from his snobbish followers). Tom Riddle nurses since his childhood in an orphanage a robust sense of entitlement to power, expressed in his transformation into the feared dark wizard Lord Voldemort. His political rebellion, however, fails because remorseless Voldemort cannot understand the love that protects baby Harry. When they meet again, the teen hero is much better equipped than his rival to win their duel. Harry’s lack of interest in patriarchal power and Voldemort’s bodily disfigurement teach readers that villainous ambition only leads to total self-destruction.
