ABSTRACT
Discussion on mortality and life table forms part of this chapter. This chapter also begins with an introduction to measures of mortality, and then delves into levels, trends and patterns in world mortality. Causes underlying high mortality in the past have been discussed. PRB (2017) forms the basis of discussion on the world scenario. Likewise, the section on India begins with trends in mortality since 1901. Thereafter, mortality conditions in terms of various measures and differentials therein for the year 2016 are examined at the aggregate level before presenting the spatial patterns in infant and under-five mortality rates. Sex differentials in mortality in India at the aggregate level have also been discussed. Data are drawn from SRS-2017, NFHS4–2015–16.
