ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to literacy and education. Discussion on the world scenario pertains to literacy rates among youth (15–24 years) and adults (15 years and more) along with proportion population with at least some secondary education in the age group 25 and above. Data are obtained from UNESCO 2017 and Human Development Report 2016. Similarly, discussion on India begins with trends in literacy rates since 1901, and moves on to literacy rates among youth and adults along with educational attainment in the age group 25 years and above in 2011 at the aggregate level. Literacy differentials across social groups at the aggregate level are also discussed. Finally, patterns in literacy rate and educational attainment are discussed using state- and district-level data from 2011 census.
