ABSTRACT

Redundancy analysis is not a variety of psychoanalysis, but brings to the surface what might be called the individual’s social unconscious. Redundancy analysis has been developed in the course of a research project investigating the socialization patterns of bilinguals in order to provide an empirical base for theory formation in intercultural education. Redundancy analysis was developed out of an interest in laying bare the sociocultural rules of groups with dominating influence on individual socialization. The difference between redundancy analysis and Objective Hermeneutik lies mainly within a different attitude towards the structure of interaction. Redundancy analysis tries to reformulate Peter Handke’s literary program in terms of social science. It is a qualitative approach to the study of man’s social nature which compares the language of an interviewee with the language system of his/her sociocultural group in order to discover redundant patterns.
