This chapter addresses the concept of individualism, both healthy and unhealthy competition between students, and the impact of this on their education and lives. At its worst, competition can destroy trust between students and between students and lecturers. However, these claims are set against student rights and freedoms. The author proposes a new Scholarship of Student Learning (SSL) that has both epistemological and ontological components. In the model there is the scholarship of knowledge production and the scholarship of knowledge guardianship. However, these sit alongside the scholarship of care and the scholarship of generosity. The author discusses the relationship between these four scholarships and some of the considerations that may be necessary for implementation.
