ABSTRACT

Accident investigation is something of an art: there are techniques to learn and a style to develop. Over time, the techniques become individualized, influenced by the equipment being used, the types of accidents being investigated, and the set of skills one brings to the endeavor. This unique blend makes up the personal style.

The best way to embark on this journey is to serve an apprenticeship: i.e., to work with a mentor, or better yet, mentors. A police academy is another good place to start. Chapter 7 does not replicate or replace that experience; it simply sets forth a few observations that may be of use. These are grouped under the topics of information gathering, scene inspection, vehicle inspection, crush measurement, and inspection equipment.
