ABSTRACT

Taking the Camus-Sartre debate over the means and ends of revolution as the basis, the Introduction introduces the main subject of revolt and committed writing with regard to colonialist policy in Algeria, government censorship, police repression, the Algerian War of Independence, and its aftermath. A historical overview of President Charles de Gaulle’s leadership and governmental policy toward Algeria and Algerians during the war and those of successive governments of the French Fifth Republic is followed by an introduction to the works and the questions that will be examined in the four chapters.
