ABSTRACT

The chapter begins by presenting an overview of the emerging academic field of self-leadership. Competing definitions and models of self-leadership are presented, alongside a consideration of strategies that facilitate the ability of an individual to self-lead. Self-leadership strategies have been found to lead to higher levels of performance across clinical, sports, educational and employment contexts. According to Neck and Houghton, self-leadership strategies can be grouped into three strategies: behavioural strategies, natural reward strategies and constructive thought pattern strategies. Interestingly, it has been theorized that self-leadership can be learned. It is hoped that the reader has gained a valuable insight into key theories of leadership, and that the knowledge and education will empower them to both seek and realize their own potential as a leader. Certainly the political ramifications of Biko’s death caused reverberations around the world.
