ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the study, beginning by examining sociolinguistic theories and methodologies that examine gender, masculinity, and sports in sociolinguistics. Section 2 sets out and justifies the selection of the research methods for this study. I discuss the results of attribute mining used to define the social space of this particular context, touching on the intersection of micro (e.g. interactional identities), meso (locally relevant categories), and macro (e.g. gendered identities) factors. The final two sections present in-depth contextualization of the social and linguistic environment of Club Fingal. The study identified salient social practices in this context (e.g. members often performed different interactional identities in different talk), before examining what type of language correlates with these identities. The purpose is to create an understanding of the context of identity construction in this context, and social practices involved in the negotiation of alignment to available identities.
