ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how members create a sense of belonging within the immediate community of the league. Belonging is theorised as a practice and connected with ideals of inclusivity. Banter, jokes, and insults are discussed as ways that members signal who is and who is not an insider. Members are shown to deliberately engage in projects of inclusivity through time spent together both in training and during tours, and through teamliness and acceptance. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the themes of belonging and inclusivity, highlighting members’ need to belong and how that plays out through a range of different practices that can be theorised through the notion of acceptable masculinities.
