ABSTRACT

Historically, the study of perception originated as a branch of physics. It was moulded in an attempt to extend the principles of physics to problems of consciousness. The designation ‘psychophysics’ thus gives a very appropriate description of the new branch of science. There was physics and there was the psyche. This origin of the study of perception, and thus of psychology, does not seem to have received due attention. Therefore, I will expand a little upon this aspect of the history of psychology.
