ABSTRACT

The fruit of Dacryodes edulis is commonly eaten boiled or roasted as snacks or in combination with other foods, such as boiled corn in some parts of Nigeria. However, the true value of this fruit has not been harnessed due to the fact that it is underutilized. It is, therefore, important for us to evaluate what we eat so as to know what value they add to our health. Thus, we investigated the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities of flavonoids from the fruit extract of Dacryodesedulis. The flavonoids were isolated and screened for anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activities using typed cultures of five pathogenic bacterial and fungal isolates, the data obtained were analyzed using the ANOVA test. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the fruit of the Dacryodesedulis showed the presence of flavonoids in both the dried powdered fruit sample and the ethanolic extract of the defatted plant sample. The crude flavonoid extract showed promising anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activity.
