ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to evaluate preliminary phytochemical, total polyphenolics content, anti-oxidant, and anti-microbial activities of Elaeocarpus tectorius leaf extracts. The presence of alkaloids, phenolic compounds, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, glycosides, and steroids were analyzed. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited strong scavenging activities against DPPH (9.43 µg/mL–IC50 value), FRAP (8066.66 mM (Fe (II)E/mg extract), and phosphomolybdenum radicals (1460.66 mg AAE/g extract) compared to other extracts. Similarly, ethyl acetate extract showed positive and efficient results in the anti-microbial analysis with a strong zone of inhibition, MIC, and MBC/MFC against E. coli. The anti-microbial potential of the leaf extracts against UTI pathogens was assessed by the well diffusion method along with MIC and MBC/MFC. Ethyl acetate extracts of E. tectorius leaf were found to be active against E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa, whereas the methanol extract was effectively inhibiting C. albicans. The results obtained suggest that the ethyl acetate extract of the E. tectorius leaf contains rich bioactive compounds that can be used as an important source to obtain natural anti-oxidant and anti-microbial agents for pharmaceutical industries.
