ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, the first tenet of Clifford’s philosophy, empowering others, is explored further, with specific examples related to his teaching, research, and service. Clifford believes that knowledge increases independence, and thus empowers individuals to make their own choices. One can see evidence of this approach in his teaching, through his syllabi, assessment practices, and attendance policies. With respect to empowering others through research, he has coauthored many of his books and journal articles with students, catapulting them into the profession and then providing them with the tools to be independent. Clifford has championed disenfranchised populations for all of his life, standing up for children, women, the poor, minorities, and LGBTQ populations.
