ABSTRACT

‘Beyond Borders: The International Reach of Postterrorist Hindi Films’ highlights the smooth transition from the local to the truly international in Hindi postterrorist cinema because of the inbuilt transnational element indicated by natural referencing of Pakistan. Impacted by the international reverberations of the 9/11 attacks, these films faithfully reflect the border-transcending terror, responding uniquely as Indians while taking some cues from Hollywood. Bolstered by the Bollywood penchant for foreign locales, these films project a contemporary terroristic world of superior weaponry and technological know-how, matched by sophistication in technology and expertise in the film-making process. Dwelling on the post 9/11 Islamophobia and on conflicting personal and national allegiances, these sometimes critique the event through the filter of humour. Mostly, adhering to the popular ‘Bollywood’ format in that they include song, dance, and melodrama, the 9/11 Hindi films sometimes enter into foreign collaborations, quite often embracing the thriller format and Hollywood-slick in filmmaking.
