ABSTRACT

A unique psychological attitude in one culture is de-emphasized in another, and vice versa. The North American and Japanese psychoanalytic circles have been dissociated from each other. Mono no aware is one of the Japanese cultural ideals to which the author have paid close attention, because he believe it includes a dynamic systems view. Psychoanalytic concepts were originally expressed in German within the context of European and Jewish culture. They were carried to the United States and other countries, and have gone on to influence and be influenced by other cultures. This cross-cultural process continues, with new ideas joining and deepening the flow. In the treatment of an obsessive-compulsive Japanese male patient who was intolerant of anyone’s mistakes, including his own, we both experienced a strong sense of anxiety.
