ABSTRACT

George Eliot was the pen-name of Mary Ann Evans who was born in Warwickshire in 1819. She was much interested in theology but it was not till after her common law marriage with G. H. Lewes that she published novels. Adam Bede, 1859, and The Mill on the Floss, 1860, were followed by many others including Middlemarch, 1871–2, which was fìrst published in instalments and is regarded by many modern critics as her most successful and profound work. She died in 1880.
