Stevie Smith was born in Hull. Her fìrst novel A Novel on Yellow Paper was published in 1936 and The Holiday in 1949. She is a poet who often illustrates her own poems, e.g. ‘Not Waving But Drowning’ (1957), She is a true original and it is very difficult to convey the quiddity of her writing.
