ABSTRACT

The more we consider the question of marriage in the Army the more deeply convinced are we that it is the duty of the Government to promote it in every possible way. In seeking for the objections to the connubial state of Soldiers, we find them summed up in these few words: the Soldiers’ wives are, generally speaking, useless sloths, a burthen to their husbands, a source of poverty and privation to them, and a Regimental encumbrance when the Troops move. They cause strife in the Barracks, and a great deal of trouble to Commanding Officers and Adjutants, who are perpetually appealed to in order to heal differences among themselves, or among the men whom they have stimulated to quarrel.
