ABSTRACT

Mrs. Crart’s daughter, Sarah Sophia, had been the regimental schoolteacher before her marriage. The teacher referred to in the Colonel’s letter below may have been her successor. It is unclear what the young woman’s transgression may have been, but some kind of relationship with a soldier seems a likely surmise. Whatever happened, the Colonel’s outrage did not seem to be shared by the rank and file and NCOs of the detachment, possibly indicating a shear between middle-class and plebeian values.
