ABSTRACT
Following on from issues within the USA, this chapter considers: ‘Are we watching the death throes of “the American Century” or are we witnessing the rebirth of the US as a powerful global force for good?’ It also considers the unpalatable alternative that we are witnessing a rebirth of the USA as a global power for ill. It makes the point that the Trump presidency has made clear that the US will only ever act in its own interests, or at least those of its major lobby groups), regardless of any signed or approved agreement. Although, deep down, this has been implicitly understood by everyone, until the last few years it was seldom verbalised and, for most people, there was always the hope that they were wrong. The chapter goes on to discuss issues around the re-emergence of nationalism across the world.
