ABSTRACT

While public affairs faculty members study administration and management techniques, they are rarely trained in the nuts and bolts of academic administration. The lack of training for those who manage public affairs programs should be of concern to a field that is dedicated to teaching efficient and effective administration. This chapter introduces the concept of effective management for MPA programs, not only in terms of addressing the challenges that programs currently face in today’s polarized society but also in the context of the role of the director in a university setting and within the accreditation requirements of NASPAA. By introducing research on the core aspects of program management, a road map for the effective director is established.
