ABSTRACT

Recruiting and retaining diverse student bodies contributes to the goals of fairness and effectiveness in public administration. Recruiting is also important in that public affairs programs need to maintain sustainable enrollment levels to be viable academic units in their home universities and to serve the needs of the local governments and nonprofits in local communities. The goal of the chapter is to examine issues of recruitment and retention for public affairs programs in order to provide advice for the directors of public affairs programs. This chapter discusses the importance of recruiting and retaining students and details four strategies to help directors with their recruitment efforts. A case study of how these strategies can be utilized is also provided.
