ABSTRACT

We are living in an age of anxiety with fears that are political, social, and individual, caused by threats to life and by economic and cultural changes. In times of great change and uncertainty, people become vulnerable to narcissistic leaders who promise to alleviate their fears. Donald Trump is such a leader. But Trump has not dealt with the real causes of anxiety. He has increased uncertainty and anxiety in America. A number of mental health professionals have diagnosed Trump as suffering from a narcissistic personality disorder, but Trump is neither suffering nor sick. Many narcissists have become effective leaders, but some of them have had a purpose of working for the common good. Trump’s only purpose is to be admired as a winner. He is an authoritarian who only respects powerful people and is contemptuous of the weak and vulnerable people. In contrast to Trump, we need leaders who deal with the real causes of anxiety and work for the common good on five levels: global, national, community, organizational, and individual.
