ABSTRACT
Albertine Gaur remarks in her book A History of Writing that “The story of writing is a tale of adventure which spans some twenty thousand years and touches all aspects of human life.”1 It is with some temerity, then, that we have attempted to sketch the history of a small segment of this vast enterprise.
