ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the accommodation needs for artists of the future, their way of life and their use of future technologies. The year(s) out working in an architectural practice is an important phase between undergraduate and postgraduate study. The chapter is designed to help student find vacancies, prepare a portfolio, shine at interview, stay in touch with their school, record and learn from their experiences, and develop a receptive mind in practice to maximise their learning opportunities. Practices will be most interested in student architectural skills, so make sure student bring these skills and experiences to the fore. Start looking around, and inform practices or agencies that are student looking for a year-out job. Also be aware of adverts placed in publications and webzines such as the Architects’ Journal, Building Design and Dezeen. Adapting to a new workplace and unfamiliar people can be slightly disorienting at first.
