ABSTRACT

This chapter provides available measurement tools for fluid mechanics experiments. All fluid mechanics and convective heat transfer experiments require instrumentation to accurately measure the fluid velocity and/or mass flow rate. Therefore, the chapter begins with the fundamentals of pressure probes and discusses their implementation through fabrication of static pressure taps and pitot-static probes and calibration of transducers. Various obstruction flow meters, including orifice and Venturi meters, are presented for mass flow rate measurements. The chapter concludes with a discussion of error estimates for pressure probes and flow meters. Several examples are included to demonstrate the use of various forms of instrumentation to calculate the fluid velocity or flow rate.
