ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a model for firmly establishing logistics in an organization. The logistics concept can be described as the design for the way in which an organization wants logistics to function. Developing a logistics concept has three main functions: to fully understand the management of the flow of goods, to provide a framework for a coordinated action plan and to stimulate full awareness of logistics throughout the company. The chapter deals with logistics and information and communication technology. It describes the pipeline system through which goods have to flow before being at the right time and in the right place for the customers. The chapter introduces the supply chain operations reference model. An Enterprise resource planning is software that facilitates the flow of information between all functions of a business, such as production, logistics, finance and personnel & organization.
