ABSTRACT

Being able to work with others is a required skill in most professions. This chapter discusses some elementary characteristics of communication in tutorial group meetings. These characteristics are important for improving the functioning of the tutorial group. The tutorial group has a central role in problem-based learning. Because the mutual exchange of knowledge and ideas is important a tutorial group can only consist of a limited number of participants. Working in a tutorial group can also have a positive effect on a student’s motivation to learn. In the work environment, communication and collaborative skills rehearsed in the tutorial group will have to be converted into practice. Each member of the tutorial group is charged with successfully clarifying and solving problems through task-related work and productive collaboration. The chapter describes the respective positional roles in a tutorial group: the discussion leader, the scribe and the tutor.
